Person-centered care at the end of life extends beyond an individual’s physical and clinical needs. It also means recognizing and supporting the family members who are experiencing the transition alongside them—including children.

Talking with children about serious illness, death and dying can feel overwhelming. Adults may avoid these conversations because they want to protect children or are uncertain about what to say. However, children often recognize that something is changing. Honest, compassionate and developmentally appropriate conversations can reduce fear and confusion while creating opportunities for connection, understanding and healing.

Erika Morelli is a hospice RN and Clinical Director of Operations with a deep commitment to supporting individuals and families through meaningful end-of-life experiences. She has walked alongside countless families during times of transition, helping them navigate the clinical, emotional and relational moments that matter most.

Erika specializes in guiding caregivers as they talk with children about serious illness, death and dying in ways that are honest, compassionate and developmentally appropriate. As a children's book author, she believes that including children in these conversations can foster connection, reduce fear and create opportunities for healing and understanding.
